The TVR Tuscan is one of the last iconic British Sports cars, with its unique styling and stunning interiors the TVR Tuscan is not a car for the shy. Our brief was to create an audio system that remained both loud and clear with the roof off. The standard audio system comprises a pair of 10cm coax speakers behind the seats and a CD tuner located in a dash mounted pod. With the roof off all the sound was lost due to the extremely loud straight through exhausts. We looked at the front doors and decided to modify the standard door pocket to accept a 6.5” Midbass driver. The speaker baffle was created with a MDF speaker baffle which was fibreglassed to the original pocket. These were then sent to D&C Trim in Blackpool who are the original trimmers from the TVR Factory in matching leather.

We chose Rockford Fosgate POWER series for all the audio, set of RF T162s 6.5” components front the system with a RF P3D4 10” slim subwoofer mounted into a custom fiberglass box, trimmed in leather and alcantara. This does not take up any room in the boot and blends seamlessly into the interior. Two RF T400.2 2 channel Power series amplifiers were fitted one to run the subwoofer and the other to power the front components. These were mounted under a false floor in the boot as the space is used to stow the rear window and roof panel when it is removed from the car. The source unit is an Alpine CDA 9886 CD tuner with IPod and USB facilities.

We decided the Kenwood DNX7240BT double din media centre was the solution. The unit features fully integrated touch screen Garmin satellite navigation which covers the whole of Europe, so it’s very handy on long trips to Spain. Dave also liked the fact that he could play the videos from his IPhone on the 7” touch screen as well as providing Bluetooth Hands free calling. To keep the IPhone handy we fitted a Brodit charging cradle in the center consul. To keep the kids entertained we fitted 7” screens into the O.E headrests with audio taken care of via a pair in headphones. The Kenwood DNX7240BT features Dual zone entertainment, this means that Dave could have the Satellite navigation on whilst listening to his IPod whilst the kids are entertained by the built in DVD player with separate audio channel.

The Hummer has a Bose amplified audio system and steering wheel controls. We were able to adapt these to be used with Kenwood system by using PAC audio interfaces which are fully programmable.

While we had the vehicle in our workshop Dave asked us if we could sort some extra finishing touches to the car. We fitted a full chrome pack, Varad wheel arch lighting system and 25” inch Giovanna alloy wheels with 315/40/VR 25 Pirelli Scorpion tires. A finishing touch we replaced the gear leaver with a chromed hand grenade

Following on from Terry Tunstalls VW Polo install Terry decided to upgrade his standard sound system in his VW Golf MK4. The car is a multi trophy winning car on the show and shine circuit. The category that he enters is “stock” so no changes can be made to the car or he will loose points. We chose JL Audio and Audison equipment for this car as they have some unique products ideally suited to this car. To head the system terry chose a Kenwood DNX7200 DVD screen. This was the only concession from stock. The speakers were Focal Utopia components in the standard location with JL Audio 6.5”coax speakers in the rear locations. Amplification is by an Audison LRX 4.300 4 channel amplifier running the front speakers and subwoofer. The amplifier is mounted behind the off side rear quarter panel, with a Kenwood TV tuner behind the nearside rear quarter. We did not want to take any room up in the boot, so we chose a custom enclosure from JL Audio. This enclosure is specifically made for the VW Golf MK4 and is designed to fit under the spare wheel and fitted with a JL Audio 10w3 subwoofer it provides all the lows and bass lines you could want.

Terry Tunstall has for many years been a regular on the vw show and shine scene scooping many trophies along the way with his immaculate MK4 VW Golf Anniversary. Terry keeps this in his heated garage when not at shows. For his daily driver terry purchased a brand new VW Polo.  The very day he picked the car up he dropped into The ICE House to upgrade the audio system. Terry wanted to show both his Golf and his new Polo so a simple but stylish install was designed.  The equipment we chose was from Rainbow. To head the system up terry wanted a full multi media system to include satellite navigation, DVD and blue tooth hands free. The Kenwood DNX7240bt double din unit was fitted into the standard location. From this the audio signal was boosted by an Audio Control Overdrive 9volt line driver. This allowed us to keep the distortion and background noise at a minimum and give a more powerful and dynamic sound. The audio was then fed into an Audio Control EQT 30 band digital EQ, allowing us to smooth out any peaks or dips in the sound and tailoring the sound for Terries taste in music.

Rainbow I-Paul amplifiers were chosen, a 2.400 was bridged to provide a Hertz HX300 12” subwoofer with 400 watts RMS while a 4.300 4 channel amplifier was bi wired to run a set of Rainbow SLC265.3 component speakers fitted into the standard door locations with the tweeters housed in custom “A” post builds to raise the sound stage above dashboard height.

A simple design for the boot was chosen with a custom fiberglass sub box, amplifiers flush mounted into the floor. The EQ and TV tuner are housed in a hidden rack behind the rear seats.

Terry also changed the wheels to Schmidt 17” Th line and added blue motion front and rear splitters. Gti side skirts all painted by Staffordshire Car Colors

Audi S3 Audio Install By The Ice House

Steve Lockley and his Audi S3 are regulars on the VW/Audi scene. It has received numerous trophies and magazine features both nationally and internationally. Over the years Steve has spent a small refining his car. First off was a Audi 1.8T 20V turbo conversion, APR Re-map Stage 2, Forge Dump Valve, Forge Front Mount Intercooler, Audi six speed gear box with MTM paddle and Newspeed quick shift, H&R Coilovers, Heated Recaro seats re-trimmed in Bentley Tropical Orange including full boot, parcel shelf.

The only thing missing was an audio install.

I contacted Andy at the The Ice House who listened to my requirements and suggested several system ideas to suit my budget. The brief Steve gave us was quality equipment. We chose two Rainbow IPaul amplifiers for there simplistic looks and superior sound quality. Speakers were from the Hertz range, Hi-Energy components at the front and coaxial in the rear fit into the standard location. Sub bass is taken care of with a Hertz Hi Energy 12” subwoofer. A Kenwood DVD screen heads up the system. This was chosen for it’s hi specification and flexibility. System cabling is taken care of using Audison Connection cable and interconnects and Skinz sound deadening throughout the car. The install is a simple build housing both amplifiers and a sub box the Hertz subwoofer reverse mounted. The install was trimmed in matching grey alcantara and tropical orange vinyl to carry the theme from the front to rear of the car. For the 2009 show season Steve has fitted a set of Garson Dad chrome alloy wheels studded Swarovski crystals. So as a special install touch we used the spare wheel well as a display cabinet for a Swarovski crystal cleaning kit. Future plans for the car are new front seats and interior lighting.
